A prosperous man was growing old and wanted to leave his business and wealth to one of his three sons. He loved them all equally. Which one would use the wealth wisely after he was gone? To find out, he devised a test.
To each son he gave a small sum of money with the instruction «You’re to buy something that will fill this room. Spend it all, but no more. Be back by sunset.»
The three brothers headed out, wondering what they should do. When evening came, the first appeared with a bale of straw mid scattered it about the room, almost covering two walls. «Not had!» his father said proudly.
After they removed the mess, the second son brought in his purchase: a large sack of thistledown that, when fluffed, half filled the room with floating thistle. «Nice work!» the father responded.
The third and last son hung his head. «Father,» he said, «I was walking to market when I saw a hungry child, so I bought him some food. I passed the church and went in to pray, leaving more of the money for missions. I had only enough left to purchase this.» He held up a small candle that he placed on the table. Since it was getting dark, he lit the wick, and a warm glow reached to the farthest corners of the room.
The father smiled. «Son,» he said, «you have filled this room not only with light, but with kindness and unselfishness. I can see that whatever you have, you will always use it to bless others. My business and wealth will be yours.»
