They won’t see us,» Mike shouted. «Even if they did, they won’t stop in a storm like this.» Nicolas ignored his friend and kept waving, hoping against hope that someone on the British Navy tanker would notice his desperate plea for help. Earlier that day Mike and two fishing partners had headed across the calm Mediterranean Sea in search of a good catch. They had been caught in a sudden storm. Crushing waves had destroyed their boat. Now it looked as if the giant swells would claim their lives. That’s when they saw the lights of the tanker.
A call echoed from the lookout. «Strange object in the water, sir,» the watchman announced. «Looks like a man waving.» Bells rang in the engine room as the captain ordered, «All stop!» Searchlights flickered on as the ship twisted and turned in the heaving seas. Mike and Nicolas saw ropes falling toward them and heard shouts of encouragement high overhead. In minutes they were safe. But the doomed boat had had three fishers. The third man was too weak to respond to his rescuers. «I’m going after him,» the captain called out. He and another sailor leaped into the waves, found the floundering victim, and skillfully brought him back to safety. «No captain in the queen’s navy is afraid of personal risk when another man’s life is in danger,» the brave commander told his men.
