Q: I am a boy eleven years old. I am very disrespectful to my mom, and it is a habit. How do I stop being disrespectful?
A: Habits are difficult to break—but not impossible. In fact, bad habits are made to be broken! So how do you do it? First of all, keep a small notepad handy and after a clash with your mom jot down the events that occurred just before the blowup. Just by being more aware of the situations leading up to the event, you can often prevent it from happening.
Sometime when you and your mom are both in a good mood, sit down and talk openly about your habit of showing her disrespect. Discussing it with her will probably be the most helpful thing you can do. I think you’ll find her to be quite understanding if you are sincerely trying to show her more respect.
Don’t give up if you temporarily fall back into your old habit. Hang in there and keep working at it.
Finally, think of the rewards of forming a new habit of respect toward your mother. A helpful text you may wish to memorize is Ephesians 6:1-3: «Children, obey your parents; this is the right thing to do because God has placed them in authority over you. Honor your father and mother. This is the first of God’s Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: that if you honor your father and mother, yours will be a long life, full of blessing» (TLB).
