«Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon» (Isaiah 55:7).
OUR BRAINS are very complex organs. God created us with unequaled sophistication and is more than interested in all that happens at the level of our minds, because our thoughts control our behavior, our personal relationships, and our way of living religion. Having such a complex instrument available to us calls us to exercise responsibility over it, in order to care for it as God commands. You may be asking yourself, «Does God command us to care for our thoughts?’ Yes, of course. This is abundantly clear in the Scriptures.
- The first thing He asks us is to submit our thoughts to the divine filter: «Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts» (Psalm 139:23, 24, NLT). Perhaps you are wondering how this is done. Here is an idea: «For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart» (Hebrews 4:12). Reading the Bible is the first and most decisive step.
- Once we have compared our way of thinking with the biblical model, the right thing to do is adjust to it: «Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God» (Romans 12:2).
- When our minds are in harmony with God, we must form a balanced concept about ourselves: «For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly» (Romans 12:3).
- And concerning our personal relations, «I appeal to you to be of one mind, united in thought and purpose» (1 Corinthians 1:10, NLT).
- «Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things» (Philippians 4:8, NIV).
- «Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts» (Proverbs 4:23, GNT). That is the part that is up to you to do every day.
