“Tor the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, but His secret counsel is with the upright” (Proverbs 3:32).
FRIENDSHIP
Abraham was born in Ur during the Neo Sumerian period. «During the 75 years that Abraham lived in Ur and Haran the country was under the domination of Sumerian rulers, although the Amorites, who had already taken most of Syria and Palestine, were already pouring into Mesopotamia. By 1830 B.C. they founded the powerful 1st dynasty of Babylon, whose 6th king, Hammurabi (c. 1728—1686 B.C.), became the strongest ruler»—The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 8, p. 9.
During his childhood he had serious problems with his religious ideas because his family worshipped both the God of Heaven and other heathen gods (Joshua 24:2). That dualism of worship resulted in young Abraham growing up without fully identifying with the Lord. In addition, the environment in Mesopotamia, and especially in his family, was not entirely healthy for this spiritual growth.
One day the true God came into his life and invited him to be His friend. Abraham accepted the invitation, and everything began to change. They both formed a deep friendship and spent lots of time together (James 2:23). Abraham’s trust in the God of Heaven became so big that he was willing to leave his country and his relatives, wander about for several years through a land that would supposedly be his and, most unbelievable of all, accept God’s command to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac, which didn’t happen. He had learned to trust the Lord and open his heart to God as to a friend, to listen to His voice and accept His will. His Friend was trustworthy enough to be able to follow His promptings word for word. Nevertheless, Abraham failed Him several times, doubting His promises and lying to others. But God forgave him and renewed his trust. A solid friendship with God is a reality that the children of God can attain. It means that both you and I can enjoy that kind of experience today. The only thing God wants is to be your Friend. That’s the basis of Christian hope and faith. He knows you’re not perfect and that, like Abraham, you might have some ideas today that are not in keeping with the heavenly Father’s true image. But that doesn’t prevent Him from being your friend. Don’t forget. The important thing is that you live with Him each day.
I invite you to accept the Lord as your Friend today. He is willing to help you live this extraordinary experience.
