SMILE!

Relationships

«The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones healthy» (Proverbs 1 5:30).

There is nothing warmer and more relaxing than a genuine smile, especially if it comes with pleasant messages; the result is good mood and increased physical well-being. This is confirmed by today’s text: a light in the eyes sends joy to the heart and good news give physical strength.

The researcher Fritz Strack studied the effect of a smile on the mood of a person. In his research, he explained to the participants that he was investigating the feelings of people who had disabled hands and had to use their mouth or teeth for their daily activities such as writing with a pen or using the TV remote control. He instructed half of his subjects to perform their tasks while holding a pencil between their teeth (forcing the smile muscles) and the other half to do the same tasks with a pencil placed between their lips (preventing the smile). He then made each of the participants review the level of humor of a cartoon series. It was clear that those who were Kolding the pencil between their teeth considered the cartoons to be funnier than those who were holding it between their lips.

The conclusion of these observations not only proves that «a merry heart makes a cheerful face» (Prov. 15:13) but that a single smile can improve the mood. This is probably why the patriarch Job invites us to display a glowing look which matches a good smile. The same author ensures us that it is possible and advisable to change our face when he said, «I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face and wear a smile» (Job 9:27).

Apart from the advantages that a joyful face brings to our physical and mental health, we have to emphasize that it will help us a great deal in our interpersonal relationships. When one of the speakers is glowing and smiling, he affects the other person’s humor (or other people’s humor), smoothing differences and inviting closeness and friendly relations.

Today, be determined to smile throughout the day. Remind yourself over and over again: «I’ll keep a big smile on my face.» Share a smile with every member of your family, co-worker, neighbor and, every person you get in touch with in your business dealings . . . You will experience general well-being and your relationship with others will be more pleasant. Most importantly, you will do the Lord’s will because He invites you to keep «the light in your eyes.»
