«Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds» (Psalm 36:5).
A YOUNG STUDENT was in her fifth year at an Adventist secondary school; she would soon be in college. She dreamed about being a lawyer, so she looked forward to the day she would begin to fulfill her dream. Her grades were excellent, and so was her conduct. A mixture of timidity, sweetness, and gentleness were reflected on her face. However, her best quality was her loyalty to God. Her mouth articulated declarations of love and deep respect for the heavenly Father.
Once she finished her high school studies, she emigrated to new horizons like her classmates. Years went by and the young law student no longer went to church, since she had to study; neither was her face filled with sweetness. She seemed like a different person. When she was asked why she had stopped going to church, she answered: «Because I prefer the forgiveness of God than the forgiveness of men.
He knows I cannot go to church now.
What a strange concept of God’s forgiveness, mercy, and faithfulness. If we are the ones who fail, move away from Him, stop fulfilling the indications of His Word, and give priority to studies and profession above the experience of faith, what type of forgiveness are we asking for? God does not call us to distance ourselves from Him in our daily routine, believing that it is fine, that there is no problem with that since He is not as important as our studies, work, or spouse. God does not understand if we turn our backs on Him while we simultaneously count on His forgiveness and taking it for granted as if all it took is a magical wand. What is missing is a true conversion that helps us to establish the correct order of priorities in our lives. Ellen G. White said, soul shall be imbued with divine love and captivated with the heavenly mysteries. When he understands these things, his former life appears disgusting and hateful» (Testimony Treasures, vol. 1, p. 253).
I believe that that is the experience our friend in today’s story will live someday. She will realize that she will need to be imbued with divine love and see herself captivated by the mysteries of God; she will understand that the decisions she took in those conditions were not the best. May you be wise in your priorities, so you will not go through her experience.
