«[If you honor the Sabbath,] you shall delight yourself in the Lord; and I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father» (Isaiah 58:14).
STOP!» On repeated occasions, my thoughts hear this command. Sometimes, I obey and I sit on a mound of rocks beside my house. From there, I can look at the high mountains that surround the area. I see the pines swaying, moving with the wind in a gentle rhythm; I see the rays of the sun between the high mountains, tinting the thick vegetation of the forest in various tones of green. I sigh deeply and my senses delight to see the birds flying with their beautiful feathers and sweetening the air with their songs. The tall quebracho trees seem made of small pieces of wood and cork, and above them, there are always parasitic plants that hang like collars, and wild flowers typical of the area around Chimbo in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. On all sides, I see the majestic creation, a message of God to His creatures. It is like a bath of endorphins, a stream of optimism, and a beautiful sensation of fullness.
Every scene, every landscape, every creature created, and every flower designed by the divine hand take my thoughts to Genesis, to the beginning, to the moment when God said, «Let there be light, let there be green grass, let there be colors, let there be life itself. . 0» That week of creation, God left the best part for the end: the Sabbath.
Sabbath is the monument of divine creation. The Sabbath means» Stop!’ Do not continue with that stress in your life; take a break from so much work and so much anxiety, and come to My feet to sit down for a while. Leave your concerns, your thoughts, and your projects so you can rest with Me.
«Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy» (Exodus 20:8), the Scriptures tell us. This command continues to echo in our minds with the words of the prophet Isaiah:» If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you shall delight yourself in the Lord» (Isaiah 58:13, 14).
This Sabbath, I invite you to stop, to draw near to God and worship Him, and to enjoy His creation. Since «the mouth of the Lord has spoken,» that is why we should do it. Happy Sabbath.
