«When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, ‘Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ Aaron answered them, ‘Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me’ » (Exodus 32: 1, 2, NIV).
MOSES HAD BEEN CALLED to a lofty mission: to go up on Mount Sinai to receive the divine monument of the Ten Commandments. For centuries after that experience of Moses, millions of people have gone on a pilgrim age to that very place in order to climb to the top of the mountain. have received the gratifying reward of some incredible views, but Moses’s reward on that occasion was very different; it surpassed every human expectation. Nevertheless, while he was in the presence of the only true God, his absence was a time of testing for Israel. It is said that those who wait, despair, and that is what happened to the Israelites. they were waiting for their leader, they despaired about the Uncertainty concerning what God would do. Instead of seeking dearer knowledge about the divine will, they remembered their old life in Egypt and wanted to return to the pagan customs they had known. «Among the objects regarded by the Egyptians as symbols of deity was the ox or calf; and it was at the suggestion of those who had practiced this form of idolatry in Egypt that a calf was now made and worshiped.
The people desired some image to represent God, and to go before them in the place of Moses» (White, Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 28, p. 315). Not only did the people lose control, but Aaron, the one chosen to care for that congregation in Moses’s absence—the representative, the spiritual leader— also let himself be influenced by the pressure of the majority. «So, the Lord plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aaron made» (Exodus 32:35).
However, Aaron is not different from you and me. Who has not made his own calves, or cast her images in the heat of erroneous feeling, illusion, or despair? Who has not had an idol, something that has taken the place of God in his or her heart? Do not allow yourself to be influenced by the crowd; do not imitate sin; do not despair because what you have been waiting for has not yet arrived. Ask God to increase your faith and He will do it.
