Q: I did something two years ago when I was eleven that
I know was a sin. Nobody knows about it. I’ve asked God to forgive me a bunch of times, but I still feel guilty. Has God forgiven me?
A: Suppose you have a pet Saint Bernard named Bozo
Now suppose I run over Bozo in my Chevy 4 X 4 and kill him. Naturally I feel terrible and knock on your door and in tears tell you, «I’ve killed your pet. Can you forgive me?» You feel sad, but you understand that these things happen, and you say, «I forgive you.» We bury Bozo and go our separate ways.
Now suppose that every night after that I feel so guilty that I get out of bed and go dig up Bozo and drag him to your front door and wake you up to tell you how sorry I am that I killed your dog. For a few nights you may tolerate it, but in time you’d probably bonk me on the head (or at least you’d want to!) in order to tell me you have forgiven me.
You didn’t mention whether you wronged somebody else. If so, you may need to go to that person. But know this: God has forgiven and buried whatever sin you committed two years ago. Leave it buried.
