DRINK FOR YOUR OWN CISTERN

«Drink water from your own cistern and running water from your own well» (Proverbs 5:15).

Love

Gideon belonged to the tribe of Manasseh, one of the least important tribes among the children of Israel. His name means «artisan.» God called him to lead the fight against His enemies. «The leader whom God chose to overthrow the Midianites occupied no prominent position in Israel. He was not a ruler, a priest, or a Levite. He thought himself the least in his father’s house. But God saw in him a man of courage and integrity. He was distrustful of himself and willing to follow the guidance of the Lord»—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 53, p. 553. After showing certain distrust regarding the plans to deliver the children of Israel, Gideon accepted God’s call. But God’s strategy perplexed the emerging leader: instead of outfitting him with soldiers and weapons, God sent him to fight with only three hundred warriors with strange military equipment. Against all odds, Gideon and his three hundred soldiers managed an overwhelming victory against Midianite battalions that numbered one hundred thousand men. God’s people had been delivered from their oppressors!

Gideon’s new leadership attracted everyone’s attention to himself. His fellow citizens wanted to make him king of Israel, but he refused to do so. Nevertheless, at the end of his life one of his unfortunate practices stood out: polygamy. Gideon had seventy children with many women. That created very complex life situations. But the worst came when he died. Who would now govern Israel? Everyone’s eyes turned to Gideon’s sons. But, Abimelech, one of his sons, had seventy of his brothers killed to take over Israel’s leadership, supposedly inherited from his father. The great Hebrew leader didn’t foresee the tragic consequences of his bad decisions.

«Polygamy was practiced at an early date. It was one of the sins that brought the wrath of God upon the antediluvian world. Yet after the Flood it again became widespread. It was Satan’s studied effort to pervert the marriage institution, to weaken its obligations and lessen its sacredness; for in no surer way could he deface the image of God in man and open the door to misery and vice»—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 29, p. 338.

Promiscuity and infidelities have a high price which is paid sooner or later. les better to stay away from those practices.
