DIVINE POWER COMBINED WITH HUMAN EFFORT

WHEN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS COME upon us and our faith seems to fail, we can take the following experience of Moses in the wilderness as a reference.

Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim…. Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his Israelites won, but when he put his arms down, the Amalekites started winning.

Then Moses’ hands grew tired, Aaron and Hur stood beside him and held up his arms, holding them steady until the sun went down. In this way Joshua totally defeated the Amalekites» (Exodus 17:8—13, GNT).

We see here three key elements in the Christian struggle: 1) Entrusting our destiny to the hands of the Lord. That is what Moses did when he «went up to the top of the hill»: he prayed for the Lord to act and to decide their destiny. Leaning on people of faith who can support and encourage our spirits, so that support will give us strength when we need it most. 3) Doing all in our power to obtain that victory, without sparing any effort.

‘As the Hebrews triumphed when Moses was reaching his hands toward heaven and interceding in their behalf, so the Israel of God prevail when they by faith take hold upon the strength of their mighty Helper. Yet divine strength to be combined with human effort. Moses did not believe that God would overcome their foes while Israel remained inactive. While the great leader was pleading with the Lord, Joshua and his brave followers were putting forth their utmost efforts to repulse the enemies of Israel and of God»(White, Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 26, p. 299). As you can see, we will obtain victories when 1) we lean on God through faith, 2) we combine divine power with the help of people of faith, and 3) we put forth all the human effort necessary.

Remember to raise your hands to heaven, God’s dwelling and the place from where our help and strength come. Remember to ask for human help need it. Remember to do all that you can, rather than remaining.

«Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people»(Exodus 17:12, 13)
