RICH ROBES

CHAPTER 3 of the book of Zechariah records a vision that the prophet received. In it he is a witness to the priesthood of Joshua and his intercession for the people of God, who had committed terrible sins. However, there is one more character: Satan the accuser. Joshua appears in the vision «clothed with filthy garments» (3:3). Those filthy garments are, no doubt, a symbol of the wickedness of sin, because «we are all like an unclean thing, and all unrighteousness are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away» (Isaiah 64:6).

Satan was correct: the people of God had acted wickedly and those contaminated garments were not fit to wear to present themselves before the Lord. It is possible that he is also correct in the accusations he hurls against us before the throne of God. However, we cannot forget that «the Angel Of the Lord» (Zechariah 3:1), who is Christ Himself, said, «I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes» (verse 4). How does this happen? Ellen G. White explains: «The iniquity is transferred to the innocent, the pure, the holy Son of God; and man, all undeserving, stands before the Lord cleansed from all unrighteousness, and clothed with the imputed righteousness of Christ» (That I May Know Him, p. 108).

She also adds: «The one who was clothed with filthy garments represents those who have committed wrongs, but who have come into so sincere apposition of repentance that the Lord, who forgives all sins that are repented of, was satisfied» (Letter 360, 1906). This is what Christ wants to do for us. You and I have committed errors, and He wants to forgive us. He wants to take away our garments that are filthy because of our sins and clothe us in rich robes, the appropriate attire for the solemn ceremony to which He has invited us. However, there are two prior steps. First, we must repent. Second, we must confess our sins. After these two steps we are in good hands: Christ has assured us of clothing us in rich robes.

What do you think about forming the habit of beginning each day by asking God to forgive our sins? In that way, we will be dressed appropriately every day for that great Supper that awaits us.

«Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, ‘Take away the filthy garments from him.’ And to him He said, ‘See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes’ «(Zechariah 3:4)
