He was a young man who was committed to God (2 Chronicles 26:4). His mother taught him to love the Lord and know Him through His Word. He also had the privilege of having the prophet Zechariah instruct him in the way of the Lord. At a young age he felt a strong desire to seek God with all his heart and found Him! In the year 792 B.C., merely at the age of sixteen, Uzziah was proclaimed King of Judah as coregent with his father, Amaziah. In spite of his youth, Uzziah showed great leadership because he decided to confront Judah’s eternal enemies: The Philistines. Thanks to his effective military strategies and divine help, he was able to defeat his rivals (2 Chronicles 26:6-8). In addition, he defeated the Arabians and made the Ammonites pay tribute to him. Success began to smile at him. His fame as conqueror reached Egypt.
Uzziah was also an entrepreneurial governor: he built and fortified towers in Jerusalem, built strongholds in the desert, and dug many wells (2 Chronicles 26:9-10). The country’s economy began to grow. The young king amassed a lot of cattle. He was also known because he «loved the soil.» After many years of poverty, submission and mediocrity, Judah began to enjoy economic prosperity and success in war. He organized one of the best armies in the history of the kingdom of Judah, made up of no less than 307,500 very brave soldiers, more than double the legendary Midianite troops Gideon fought against. The army was well organized and trained; it also fought in organized squadrons, something the Hebrew military had never done before. Uzziah proudly marched to battle and destroyed his enemies.
The Bible describes how this young man got to the peak of power: «So he became very famous, for the Lord helped him wonderfully until he was very powerful» (2 Chronicles 26: 15, TLB). The monarch had reached the great goals for his life holding on to God’s hand: defeating Judah’s enemies, fortifying its cities, improving the country’s infrastructure, developing the economy, promoting faithfulness to God. However, the Bible says the following: «But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the Lord his God by entering the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense» (2 Chronicles 26:16).
Pride can destroy the most promising career. Ask God to help you be humble.
