EVERY NIGHT, in our worship to God, my family and I sing children’s songs; tell stories so our little ones understand the love of our Heavenly Father more each day; express our thanks, petitions, and prayers; and to end, we hug each other. It is wonderful to feel the love of our children expressed with their little arms surrounding our bodies in delighted enthusiasm. The daily hugs of my family fill me as few things can.
In Bible times, people also hugged each other. In fact, one of the most moving hugs the Bible mentions is recorded in Genesis 46. It is an emotion-filled meeting between a father and a son—a son the father had believed for many years was dead, but finally learned that he was alive. Elderly by now and with great hope in his heart, Jacob went out to meet Joseph. It was a dream come true. I imagine that the heart of the great patriarch began to be at unusually hard; that his hands, trembling because of his advanced age, wanted to touch Joseph; that his open eyes kept scanning the horizon to be sure not to lose a single detail of the meeting. I imagine his happy face, his mind imagining what was about to happen.’
And they came to the land of Goshen. So, Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while» (Genesis 46:28,29). Two people joined together in all their fullness and expressed, without words, with the language of the soul, the deep love a father feels for his son and a son feels for his father. It is incredible all that can be expressed through something as simple as a hug.
Hugging is a manifestation of love, a therapy, a free and necessary resource that we would do well to make a habit. Hugging our relatives, our friends, and those we know That feeling of belonging that a hug gives helps us to reduce nervous tension and insomnia, increase self-esteem, defeat fear, and delay aging. Try it today. And tomorrow. Do not stop surrounding others with your love, and when the sun comes out every morning, raise your arms to heaven and hug Jesus with a hug of faith. Make a habit.
“SO THEY CAME HELD HIM BY FEET AND WORSHIPED HIM” (MATTHEW 28:9).
