BIRDS OF A FEATHER

The swan had no way of telling how low the temperature would drop that night as it made itself comfortable on a little pond in Clyde bank, Scotland. Midnight approached. The temperature continued its nosedive, and ice began forming on the surface of the water. By morning a thick crust encased the pond. When the bird awoke, it found itself trapped tightly in nature’s frozen grip. Swans need to eat constantly. They don’t have large reserves of body fat as mammals do. If it didn’t have a good, hearty breakfast soon, it would perish.

That’s when Ned Mc Caffery, a truck driver who happened by, saw an amazing thing. A seagull flow over the pond, swooped down to inspect the trapped bird, then left. But not for long. Soon it was back carrying a fish that it placed within reach of the swan. Can birds talk to each other? Apparently so, because that gull formed a «Friends of the Trapped Swan Society.» In a matter of minutes other seagulls arrived, each carrying its own life-sustaining gift for the unfortunate flier.

That afternoon the sun heated the water enough so that the ice melted and the well-fed and thankful swan rose under its own power and flew away. Some found an owl by railroad tracks in Sussex, England. It had been injured and couldn’t fly. But surrounding it where piles of dead mice, it seemed that every owl in England had pitched to help.

We Christians could learn a lot from our feathered friends, don’t you think
