Better is the poor who walks in his integrity Than one who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. PROVERBS 19:1, NKJV
It was a few days before Christmas in the year 2000, and we had traveled to Maryland to visit my brother’s family for the holidays. During our time there we decided to do a little bit of sightseeing around the Washington, DC, area. We checked out one of the Smithsonian museums. We visited the Vietnam War memorial, and walked around the White House, where then-president Bill Clinton lived and worked. That evening, my brother took us to Union Station, a historic train station and shopping mall. We noticed a small crowd had developed in front of one of the stores. I couldn’t resist walking in that direction to see if I could see what people were trying to see. I looked around and didn’t see anything. My curiosity finally got to me, and I asked a man standing near me why we were all standing here. He turned to me and said, «President Clinton is Christmas shopping in this store, and he’s about to come out.» Sure enough, moments later, President Bill Clinton came out of the store accompanied by his Secret Service agents. Since the crowd that had gathered was small, he came over to greet us. I reached out my hand, and he shook it. I remember exactly what I said. I said, «Hey, Mr. President.» Yes, I probably could have come up with something a little classier to say, but that’s what came out.
Politicians are involved as leaders all over the world. Sadly, politicians of ten get themselves in trouble by lying or making promises they can’t keep. Sometimes they’ll say things only to get people to vote for them. The problem is, It’s not just politicians. As sinners there are times that we all tell lies. The BLIBLE warns about people who aren’t truthful. It says it’s better to be poor and honest, because people who lie are fools. Don’t be a fool today. Choose to use words that show honor and integrity.
