Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. COLOSSIANS 4:6, NKJV
During the summer I spent in Jordan, I was able to take several side trips on the weekends. One weekend, I and three other guys borrowed the staff car and decided to drive down the Dead Sea between Jordan and Israel. I say «down» because the Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth at 1,407 feet below sea level. The area is very desert-like and very hot. We had all heard stories of the Dead Sea from the Bible, and it was exciting to be there in person. It’s called the Dead Sea because there is absolutely nothing living in this body of water. No fish, no plants, nothing. The reason is that it is extremely salty. It’s so salty that if you put your hand a couple of inches under water, you can’t see it anymore. Because the water is so salty, it makes everything very buoyant. That means things float in the water very easily. We had heard that one of the popular things to do at the Dead Sea was to get in and just lie down in the water and float. We came prepared with our swimsuits, so we changed and got in the water. Sure enough, we floated on the surface. If you wanted to, you could just sit there and read a book while you were floating! As we played around for a while, water would occasionally splash up on our faces. A couple times I got some in my eyes and mouth, and it was shocking just how salty that water was compared to regular ocean water. It stung!
Salt is mentioned many times in the Bible. Our verse today says a Christian’s speech should be graceful and «seasoned with salt.» This means we are to be careful how we speak to people. Are you confrontational? When you speak, do people get offended? When you speak, the words you choose and the way you say them should reflect that you are a follower of Christ. Make a conscious choice today about how you speak to others.
