Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. GENESIS 2:3, NKJV
After attending the five Olympic events, we were sad our time there was coming to a close. As a celebration of our time there, that final Friday we decided to spend the day in downtown Atlanta at the Centennial Olympic Park, a twenty-one-acre park developed for the Olympics. One of the unique features in the park is the Fountain of Rings, an interactive fountain that is computer controlled to create a synchronized show of squirting water and music. On hot days, kids can play in the middle of the jetting fountains.
After visiting the park for several hours, we looked at the time and saw that the sun would be setting soon, so we headed home since we wanted to observe the Sabbath hours. The following morning, we heard about some very shocking news that rattled the entire Olympic Games. A man had gone to the center of the Centennial Olympic Park, where he planted and detonated a bomb, killing several people and injuring more than a hundred others. We later discovered that only a few hours before the bomb was detonated, we had been hanging around that exact same spot where the bomb had gone off. ‘I he fact that my wife and I had insisted on honoring the Sabbath day, and leaving the Olympic village before sunset, may have saved our lives.
How do you keep the Sabbath? It’s a question we each have to answer. The Sabbath is a special and specific day God has asked us to keep separate and special from the other six. It was given to us as a gift, a special day when we can show GOD our love, obedience, and respect. The Sabbath is a specific day of the week—it’s the seventh day, also called Saturday. Some people think it’s OK to keep any day of the week holy, but GOD was very specific about which day to keep. In my case, honoring that commandment may have saved my life.
