A while back, my wife and I decided that we wanted to plan a visit up north to Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. Mackinac Island is right between the upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and it’s listed as a national Historic Landmark. When he weekends for our trip to Mackinac island arrived, we packed the car and drove the six hours north to Mackinac City, on the coast of Lake Huron. We bought our tickets and boarded the ferry. This ferry held lots of bikes but not cars. When we arrived we also notice that there were no motorized vehicles to be found anywhere. We soon learned that motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island for more than one hundred years! The only vehicles allowed were emergency and service vehicles and, in the winter snowmobiles.
There is only one small town on the island, and we saw that all travel either by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. There was an eight-mile road around the entire island, M-185, which happens to be the only state highway in the United States that doesn’t allow motorized vehicles! As we walked through the quaint little town we quickly realized another thing this island was famous for-fudge! Of course, we had to try some. One of the other main features on the island is the Grant Hotel. It’s a huge, historic, Victoria-era hotel that overlooks the lake, which to this day continues to fill up rooms since it was built in 1887.
Everywhere we went, the people were super nice and friendly. Someday, strangers may come visit your community. The BIBLE says we are to treat foreigners kindly. It even says we are to love them as we love ourselves. Satan has worked hard to put a “fear of foreigners” in people’s hearts. Instead, GOD encourages us to choose love when a stranger is among you.
