PASSAGE TO WEST BERLIN

Yes, there is time and a way for everything, though man’s trouble lies heavy upon him; for how can he avoid what he doesn’t know is going to happen?  ECCLESIASTES 8:6,7. TLB

It was 1989, and one of the first places we wanted to visit was Wet Berlin, West Germany. Where did the “west” come from? Today, the city is simply called Berlin. In 1961, political changes caused the city to be divided, and the Berlin Wall was built around the “free” side of Berlin. The wall was still there where I visited in 1989, and we decided we wanted to go see it during that trip. Getting to West Berlin was a little complicated, though, since it was completely surrounded by East Germany, where tourist weren’t allowed. We decided that the best option was to try to hitchhike in. We took the train as close as we could get to the border, then we walked to the onramp that took cars to highway to West Berlin.

The four of us stood at the edge of the road and put thumbs out. To our disappointments, no one stopped. We arrived at that spot at 7:00 P.M. and by 5:00 A.M., we were still there-cold, hungry, and frustrated. By 5:00 A.M. we had decide to come up with a different plan-we’d split up. Two guys would hitchhike from a different spot, while the other two would stay there. Since our original plan was to stay in the basement of the Adventist church in West Berlin, we agreed to meet up at the church in twelve hours. We split up, and within and hour we were picked up; we were finally headed to West Berlin! Fortunately, our two friends were also able to get a ride pretty quick, and by that afternoon we had reunited at the Church in West Berlin.

We tend to conclude that our timing and plan is the perfect timing and plan. The reality is that GOD’S timing is always right. That means when we have to patiently sit and wait for GOD. It’s really a test of faith.

GOD knows the picture; trust in GOD’S timing!
