PRISON BREAK

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 1 John 3:4, NIV

My sister lives in the San Francisco Bay area, so one year while visiting her we decided to take a day trip onto the city to visit a few places. First we visited Fisherman’s Wharf, where there are many unique shops and restaurants by the waterfront. Toward the back of this area is a place where sea lions often congregate around piers and lie in the sun-often making a lot of noise with their barking. We then decided to ride the famous trolley cars that slowly make their way up and down the hilly streets of San Francisco. Our last stop that day was to visit a famous island in the bay called Alcatraz-one of the most famous prisons in the world. It closed back in 1963, but for many years it was known as one of the hardest prisons to escape from.

As we approached the island by boat, we could already see the tall walls and fences that surround parts of the island. Over the next couple of hours we toured different parts of the island. Over the next couple of hours we toured different parts of the prison as well as the concrete yard where inmates were allowed to go out and get fresh air. Everywhere we went, there were fences and bars and barbed wire. The prison cells looked tiny and very uncomfortable. It made me think of sin, because sin is also like a prison.

Even though sinning my not lead to you being put in prison, it does something worse. It separates us from GOD. Luckily, JESUS is there to forgive us every time we ask. I’m sure the prisoners in Alcatraz wished they could have been freed simply by asking for forgiveness.
