For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. JOHN 3:16, NIV
On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the Twin Towers in New York City and bought them crashing down to the ground with thousands of people trapped inside. A separate attack that day targeted the Pentagon building in Washington, DC. Another attack was thwarted when brave people on hijacked airplane over Pennsylvania force the plane to crash before letting the terrorists hurt more people. Many brave firefighters also died trying to save people in the buildings as they burned. That day was a dark day in the history of the United States. The people who died were mourned, the structures were built, and the government worked to find the people responsible for the attacks.
It took me a long time to soak it all in. I had a friend in one of the towers that day, but she was one of the fortunate people on the tower floors who was able to escape before the building collapsed. As I talked to my wife about all this, we decided to take a weekend and go to New York City and Washington DC, to visit the places that were attacked. I felt this would give us the closure necessary to deal with what had happened. A few months after September 11, we drove from Michigan to Washington, then on to New York, where I had booked a room in a hotel. Our room was on the fifteenth floor with a direct view of Ground Zero. It was shocking to look down at the huge mess as people worked around the clock to carefully sift and remove the debris. After a while, my wife went to bed, but I stayed up till almost 2;00 A.M, sitting by the window, crying and looking out over the ruins.
The sacrifices people made that day are similar to the sacrifice JESUS made to save the humanity.
Our verse today is the most famous verse in the BIBLE and reminder of GOD’s amazing sacrifice.
