Hong Kong is a very diverse city. One of the first places we visited was Aberdeen Harbor, on the other side of Hong Kong Island. Because Hong Kong is surrounded by water, travel by water is a very popular way of getting around. One of the most traditional modes of transportation is boat called a sampan, a wooden boat available in various sizes. Some are as big houseboats; some only fit a few people. Once in Aberdeen, we found a man with a sampan to take is for a ride though the harbor, where there were hundreds of unique houseboats parked in what is locally called the floating village. Nearby we found a Buddhist temple where people came by the hundreds to worship and pray. The temple was old and richly decorated with candles. In one area of the temple was old and richly decorated with statues and candles. In one area of the temple I noticed that people brought bags of food to the temple and set it there for their stone idols. I was curious to see what could happen to the food. Would it later be taken and given to the poor? I knew the idol wasn’t going to use it! Then I noticed that half of the food sitting around was already rotten.
The Buddhists left food in order to honor Buddha, who died a couple thousand years ago, but find so much more joy in honoring a living God who wants to spend meaningful time with us.
God has asked us no to allow things to become idols in our hearts and minds. We often get distracted with many things that come into our world, but we must ask God to help us stay focused on Him and make our relationship with Him priority number one.
Pay attention today to how you spend your time and energy. Do you have some idols you may have known about?
Ask God to help you not let those things absorb all your attention!
