Getting to Hong Kong from my home in Michigan was quite an ordeal. It started with a two-hour drive to the airport in Chicago. After that, we took a four-hour flight to San Francisco. In San Francisco we boarded another plane and flew another fifteen hours to Hong Kong. Between all the stops and layovers, we traveled for almost an entire day. Over the years, whenever I had looked at pictures of the city of Honk Kong, it seemed as though they were always taken from a very high hilltop overlooking the city. The pictures looked down on hundreds of skyscrapers on both sides of Victoria Harbor between Honk Kong and Kowloon.
When we arrived at the Honk Kong airport, we took a train to Kowloon. From there we needed to cross the harbor in order to get to Hong Kong. There were basically two ways across: you could take a taxi or bus through a tunnel under the harbor, or you could go the more traditional way, by boat. We decided to cross the harbor by boat. Next, we took a bus all the way up to the overlook, which was called Victoria’s Peak, and realize that there were more than seven million people crowded into the streets below us.
There are a lot of people in the world, and most are strangers to us. When we’re little we’re taught that we should not talk to strangers. That’s because it’s very important to keep kids safe. But as you slowly become an adult, that rule won’t apply as much anymore.
God has asked us to show kindness and hospitality to strangers while always exercising common sense and wisdom as we do it. In the meantime, why don’t we practice kindness and hospitality to everyone else we do know?
