MARINE ENCOUNTERS

Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity PROVERBS 21:23

Near San Diego, California there is a place called La Jolla-a great place to kayak in the ocean. I rented a kayak and headed to the beach and started padding out.

There were big waves coming in that day, and it took a little effort to get my kayak past the waves. To the right were miles of the beach, but to the left was a neat-looking cliff wall, so I went toward the cliff wall. The cliff wall looked amazing, with rocks that looked as though waves had beaten them for thousands of years. That’s when I decided that I would jump off my kayak and see what was in the water. I had my snorkeling mask with me, so with one hand holding on to my kayak, I started snorkeling to see what I could find. A few minutes later I spotted something that got my attention. I was snorkeling in water that was about eight to ten feet deep, and just below me I saw two leopard sharks swimming.  They were both about five to six feet long. I knew leopard sharks were harmless, so I proceeded to follow them in the water. Fortunately, they were not in a hurry, so I was able to follow them for about five minutes till I couldn’t keep up anymore.

Once back in my kayak, I heard something in the distance that sounded like barking. I started paddling farther along the cliff wall and went around the corner. As I came the corner I encountered a tiny rock outcrop that was filled with sea lions! They were all barking and making a bunch of very loud noise. I moved closer to them and started barking too.  They didn’t seem concerned about my imitation barking and kept on making noise.

Sometimes even people, make too much noise. They often open their mouths and say way too much before thinking about what they’re saying. Oftentimes they hurt someone or they get themselves in trouble. Be wise and ask God to help you guard your mouth and tongue from calamity!
