FOILED BY FLIES

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. EPHESIANS 4:29, ESV

In Australia, Ayers Rock, called Uluru by the aborigines, is famous because it is thought to be the largest single solid rock in the known world. It’s big and it’s red and it’s visible from miles away. As we approached it, we stopped at several points to take pictures. The views were amazing, but we noticed there were thousands of annoying flies all over the place. These were not your ordinary houseflies; these were the kind that bites. We’d take our picture and quickly jump back in the car to escape the flies. When we finally arrived at Uluru, we found even more flies!

Our plan that day was to climb Uluru, but in those first few minutes outside, we were so annoyed by the flies that we jumped back in our car. My wife and I sat there wondering what we should do next. We decided to drive around Uluru, a loop that allowed us to have a nice view of the rock from multiple angles. Soon we were faced with the same question again, what next?

We stepped outside again, and in a few moments we were attacked by the flies. At this point we knew we would we would not be to tolerate hiking up this rock with flies attacking us every step of the way. We were quite disappointed because we had driven two days through the Australian desert in order to spend time hiking on the Uluru. We ended up settling for just taking pictures at Uluru and wishing we had brought mosquito nets on the trip.

It amazed me that a fly could ruin our visit. I’d compared that to bad language. If I’m having a conversation with someone and suddenly they use cuss words, or use God name in vain, those tiny words start to ruin the whole conversation. Watch what comes out of your mouth. Don’t let little, inappropriate words ruin what you say.
