«For no matter how many promises God has made, they are Yes’ in Christ. And so through Him the Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God». 2 Corinthians 1:20, NM
ACCORDING TO AN OLD TALE, a king sentenced a criminal to death in an Oriental country. Before the sentence was carried out, the criminal was asked to state his last wish, as is customary. «Your Majesty, the only thing I really want is a cup of water,» said the criminal in his petition. The king was compassionate and ordered that a cup of water be brought to the poor man so that he could quench his thirst before dying.
Upon receiving the water, the man started to shake, and he could not take the cup to his lips. The king asked him to calm down and promised, «You will not die until you drink the water.» The criminal stopped to think about those words: «You will not die until you drink the water.» Would his life be spared if he did not drink it? Then, he did something unexpected: «Suddenly, he opened his hand and let the cup fall to the floor.» Then he looked at the king and told him, «Now I claim your royal word. You told me my life was not in danger as long as I did not drink the water. Now I cannot drink it!» The king had to honor his word and the man was left alive.*
If a human king honored the promise he had made, would the King of the universe be any different? Christ came to the world to assure us that God will not fail, that His promises are faithful and true. Paul grasped this when he said, «For no matter how many promises God has made, they are Yes’ in Christ. And so through Him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God» (2 Corinthians 1:20, NIV).
If it has to do with God’s promises, God’s answer for us will always be a definite yes in Christ. Look up those promises in the Bible, treasure them in your heart, memorize them in your mind, claim them with your mouth. You can be assured that the «yes» for the promise you truly need is in Christ.
Ellen G. White says that «we should take the promises of God, one by one, and examine them closely on every side—take in their richness, and be soothed, comforted, encouraged, and strengthened by them.»»
Today you can let «the cup fall» and tell God, «Thank You, because all Your promises are a ‘yes’ for me in Christ.»
