«There is one who scatters, yet increases more . . . The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself». Proverbs 11:24, 25
IT IS mind-boggling when newspapers and newscasts feature the fortunes of the rich and famous. They dazzle us with car collections owned by athletes, big mansions where the multimillionaire owners and CEOs of major businesses live, the jewelry collections of Hollywood stars . . But star player Sadio Mané, one of the most acclaimed forwards in European soccer, posed a question we would do well to reflect on: «Why would I want ten Ferraris, twenty diamond watches or two airplanes? What are these objects going to do for me and for the world?»
The Senegalese-born soccer player, who was earning at least seven million dollars a year with Liverpool at the time of writing this reflection, has decided to use his fortune otherwise. Mané is known as the soccer player who prefers to build hospitals and schools rather than fill his garage with luxury automobiles or wear the world’s most expensive watches on his wrist. » ‘l don’t need to show off fancy cars, big houses, travel or airplanes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me,’ he told Ghanaian outlet nsemwoha.com in 2019”*
Solomon, who in his days possessed greater wealth than any other king on earth, declared, «The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself» (Proverbs 11:25). The text literally makes reference to a «person of blessing»; someone who is willing to contribute toward the prosperity of others. That generosity or blessing has to do with both material possessions and spiritual matters. «To water,» or «fills» (JUB)1iterally means to give someone a glass of water. If that is what you have, then you will be a blessing if you share it with someone who is thirsty.
The greatest act of generosity is to become a blessing to others, and we do so when we share the spiritual and material blessings the Lord generously provides for us with others. Paul affirms that «He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully» (2 Corinthians 9:6).
Following Sadio Mané’s example, we are to share what God has given us. There are beautiful promises for those who decide to accumulate less and bless more. God assures us we will be prospered and satisfied. The Lord will make a stream of blessings flow upon us.
