“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord» (Isaiah 11:2).
Isaiah 11 presents the liberation and restoration through the Messiah, a motivation for the faithful Jews not to follow the decision of their stubborn king, Ahaz. Assyria is compared to a tree whose roots and branches have been cut down (see Isaiah 7:23; 10:19, 33, 34). Following the same metaphor, the Messiah Prince is compared to a new, small shoot from the seed of Jesse and David, that would grow until it covered the whole earth. Isaiah showed in this way a future scenario when justice, righteousness, and peace would be restored, and the enemies of God’s people destroyed forever.
Are you being slandered? Are the ungodly prevailing? Do you suffer injustice or threats? Wait patiently; soon you will see the ungodly erased and your case will be vindicated before the heavenly court.
Among the characteristics of the Messiah is the fear of God. Jesus learned reverent fear and obedience because «though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered» (Hebrews 5:8). In heaven were thousands of angels who joyfully rendered Him obedience. The Majestic One, the Verb, the Creator, the great and powerful God learned to obey when He became flesh. Before He was incarnate, He had no need to fear the Father, because are one in essence and purpose, but when He took the form of a human being, He was to cultivate a reverent attitude before His Father. How important is reverence for God!
The Messiah would teach us how to reverence the name of the Most High. «[Christ] takes delight in performing the will of the Lord. His mind is God’s mind, His will is God’s will (see John 10:30; 14:10). Jesus revealed that He was divine, and lived out God’s righteousness before men; in fact, that was one reason why He came to earth.» —SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 4, p. 158.
When we fear God the way we should, we value the incarnation, life, and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. «The whole treasury of heaven is open to those He seeks to save. Having collected the riches of the universe, and laid open the resources of infinite power, He gives them all into the hands of Christ, and says, All these are for man. Use these gifts to convince him that there is no love greater than Mine in earth or heaven. His greatest happiness will be found in loving Me.»—The Desire of Ages, ch.5, p. 57.
