THE PSALM OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

«Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me» (Psalms 23:4).

“Probably the best known and best loved of all the psalms is Psalm 23 . . . It is at once the delight of childhood and the consolation of old age. . . . Undoubtedly more books and articles have been written on this psalm and more poems and hymns composed on its theme than on any other of the psalms. It has a message for men of every age.»—SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 3, p. 685. David remembers his own experience and describes God as a shepherd. Sheep are completely dependent on the care, guide, provision, and protection of their shepherd.

«Through song, David, amidst the vicissitudes of his changeful life, held communion with heaven. How sweetly are his experiences as a shepherd lad reflected in the words: ‘The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters…. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.’ Psalm 23: 1-4.»—Education, ch. 17, p. 164.

It was snowing as I was driving from Albany, New York, to Boston, Massachusetts. My tense hands grasped the steering wheel while I prayed and repeated Psalm 23. I followed along in the tracks left by the cars ahead of me. There were many overturned cars along the edges of the highway. I left New York and was now in The highway was wider, free of snow, and I felt safer. I was enjoying the snowy white landscape, and I dared to snap some pictures and increase my speed. I had stopped praying, when suddenly ahead everything turned blank. I couldn’t see a thing! I shouted in desperation, «Lord, save me! «, and God did so. It is so easy to become independent from God when the road doesn’t appear to lead through the shadow of death.

Psalm 23 was Ellen White’s favorite Psalm. She would often recite it after every vision she received. She wrote, «When I was first struck down . . . it was the wondrous power of God that had prostrated me . . . This passage was continually in my thoughts: ‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.’ Psalm 23:1. My heart was full of happiness as I softly repeated these words.”- Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, ch. 4, p.38.

Our divine Shepherd guides us and protects us until we reach His home, safe and sound.
