«If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’ (John 7:37, 38).
ERNEST VINCENT WRIGHT once heard it was impossible to write a book systematically omitting the letter «e.» What he was told made sense to someone like Wright, whose mother tongue was English, in which «e» is the most common letter. However, he decided to prove he could write an entire book without using the letter “e.”
That was how, in 1939, Wright published Gadsby, a novel with over fifty thousand words, none of which contains the vowel to prove one can talk and write without the «e,” this American had to eliminate the «e» in his typewriter, but even so he used it in the introduction and, experts say, it snuck into four words within the novel.
Just as there are people like Ernest Vincent Wright, who set out to write without the letter “e,” or without the “a,” there are also some people who are determined to live a life without God, who is the most essential part of our existence. The psalmist talks about them in these words: «For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; He blesses the greedy and renounces the Lord. The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts» (Psalm 10:3, 4). The wicked are those who are arrogant and go after the poor, those who only care about satisfying the whims of their perverse hearts. Life without God is a chaotic experience.
Let’s not focus on the wicked; instead, let’s imitate the experience of Karah’s sons and wholeheartedly sing, «As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God» (psalm 42:1, 2). If any of us feel that thirst, then we have the opportunity to accept the wonderful divine invitation: «If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water» (John 7:37, 38). Acknowledging the thirst in our hearts, accepting that we can’t live without God, is precisely what will calm the storm that rages within our soul.
You can eliminate the letter from a book and, despite being a letter so essential in a language, still have the book make sense, but eliminating God from our lives will make it completely meaningless.
Rather than trying to eliminate that «Key» from your life, resolve to turn to it more than all others.
