«ALL THESE THINGS WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU AS WELL”

«But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33, NIV).

IN HIS COMMENTARY on the Sermon on the Mount, Martin Luther wrote, «Thus he makes the birds masters and teachers, so that a weak little sparrow must stand in the gospel, to our great, lasting disgrace, as teacher and preacher of the very wisest man.»• The distinguished reformer was referring to what the Master of Galilee said in Matthew 6:25, 26: «Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them» (NIV).

What things does Jesus say we shouldn’t worry about? About what we will eat or drink, or the clothes we will need. Aren’t these the three things to which we devote most of our attention day in and day out? Jesus does not address unusual situations such as terminal cancer, a multimillion-dollar debt, or the death of a loved one, but rather the most basic aspects of our daily lives.

What the great majority of humans do in life is limited to attempting to obtain food, drink, and clothing. In doing so, we show that our mindset is completely pagan, because «the pagans run after all these things» (verse 32, NIV). People are constantly tracking paganism in symbols, practices, music. . .without realizing that paganism can consist in, among other things, an excessive ambition for material things.

What is Jesus proposing for us? Jesus tells us that, the first and most important thing is that we shouldn’t worry, that we shouldn’t allow life’s ambitions to monopolize our hearts. Second, He invites us to rook at the birds, because they don’t worry and, nevertheless, have all the things that keep us up at night, because the heavenly Father provides for their needs. And third, He promises us, «First be concerned about God’s kingdom and His righteousness, and all of these things will be provided for you as well» (verse 33, ISV).

Today, let’s look at «a bird of the air» and we will have reliable evidence that God will meet all our needs, because He always keeps His promises.
