«The Lord says to the people of Israel, Come to me, and you will live’ » (Amos 5:4, GNT).
IN TALES OF THE HASIDIM, Martin Buber recounts how Rabbi Eizik, son of Rabbi Yekel, dreamed he was asked to go to Prague to look for a treasure buried under the bridge that led to the king’s palace. After having the same dream three times, Eizik decided to go to Prague. He came to the place he had been shown, but since it was well guarded, he did not dare dig. The same thing took place every day: He would go to the bridge, and walk around it until evening.
On one occasion, the captain of the guard asked him if he was looking for something, and Eizik told him he had been told in dreams that there was treasure there. The captain laughed that Eizik had so much faith in dreams, and added, «A dream once told me to go to Cracow and dig for treasure under the stove in the room of a Jew—Eizik, son of Yekel, that was the name! Eizik, son of Yekel!» Then Eizik, son of Yekel, went back home, «dug up the treasure from under the stove, and built a House of Prayer.» The story ends with the following statement: «There is something you cannot find anywhere in the world, . . . and there is, nevertheless, a place where you can find it.»
The prophet Amos assures us of the following: «The Lord says to the people of Israel, ‘Come to me, and you will live’ » (Amos 5:4, GNT). Perhaps the soles of our shoes and of our souls have been worn out as we sought out the Lord. Every year, millions of people all over the world make pilgrimages to faraway places. They go to Rome, Israel, India, Mecca, or some famous church in their country. But the Creator of the universe does not require us to seek Him in a specific place; we don’t need to travel far to find God, because He is always by our side, no matter where we are.
The psalmist expressed in a song the following words: «Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there» (Psalm 139:7, 8).
