FEAR AND DREAD

“And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth,

and on all the fish of the Sea. They are given into your hand”

(Genesis 9:2).

“As Noah looked upon the powerful beasts of prey that came forth with him from the ark, he feared that his family, numbering only eight persons, would be destroyed by them. But the Lord sent an angel to His servant with the assuring message.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 8, p. 107. What a sad inheritance. Adam’s fear and his desire to hide has been inherited by the animals. Yesterday, we talked about the fact that fear was the first human emotion to be expressed by Adam right after he sinned and realized his nakedness. This emotion was then transferred  to the animals.

Sin deteriorated the submission of the animals to the will of man. From then on, man could only govern over them by force. Nature was so separated from man that it was necessary to intimidate animals in order to make them submit. Animals rebelled against this forced submission and would sometimes attack men. But normally, they would instinctively be afraid and would avoid man and flee from his presence.

Today’s text mentions fear and dread. When we study the subject in the Bible, we see that dread is a feeling of anguish, of being inadequate when facing a particular situation, a desire to flee from a threat. On the other hand, the expression ‘fear” is often used to refer to reverence, voluntary sub- mission, respect, and a desire to obey a superior being. God’s desire for the animal world to revere and respect mankind will be fulfilled on the New Earth. It will be wonderful to see that the chasmic separation between men and animals has been eliminated, and we will be able to play with the lions and ride on the back of a hippopotamus. When that day comes, “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the falling together; and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah l 1:6).

Take a few minutes to visualize that beautiful day in which animals and humans will peacefully live together forever.
