Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’ » (John 8: 12).
AS WE COME TO THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR, what do you see when you look back at what the last 365 days have entailed for you? And what do you look forward to in the year that is about to begin? I do not know what you see as you look back, but a «master key» is available for us to open the door to a new year. John Bunyan wrote about that key in a passage of the classic Pilgrim’s Progress.
In that passage, Bunyan portrays Christian, the main character of his allegory, in a moment of great indecisiveness. He feels lost, and exclaims in despair: «What shall I do to be saved?»
His attitude shows that he wants to run, but he does not know where to go. Just then, Evangelist shows up and asks Christian what is happening. When Christian explains he fears death and that he is not prepared for the grave, Evangelist replies, «If that is your condition, why do you stand still without doing anything?» «Because I know not where to go,» replies Christian.
«Do you see that narrow gate in the distance?» Evangelist asks.
«No.»
«Do you see that light shining far away?»
«I think I do.»
«Then keep that light in your eye,» says Evangelist, «walk directly toward it and you will find the gate. When you knock, it will be opened to you and you will be told what to do.»
Have you already figured out what the key is? Christian does not see the door, but he does see the light. What happens when he walks in the direction of the light? He finds the door. In essence, what Bunyan is telling us is the main message of today’s verse. In a world that is immersed in ever increasing darkness, the Lord’s message for you and me is: «I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.»
No matter what the 365 days of the new year bring, do not lose sight of that light for anything in the world! It is the light that shines on every human being who is born in this world; the same light that has led your steps up to now.
Dear friend, thank you for accompanying me on this long journey. As the new year begins, this is my prayer for you and your loved ones:
«Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen» (Hebrews 13:20, 21, NIV)
