SLOWING DOWN

«The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression» (Proverbs 19:11, NKJV).

Decrease the speed of your anger! Whether your anger is justified or not, you should consider the speed at which you are traveling. Are you going 90 miles per hour, with your blood boiling from fury? Or perhaps 55 miles per hour, feeling totally outraged? If your anger is over the speed limit, you should step on the break. If you drive down the freeway too fast, you will not be able to read the exit sign in time to switch lanes when you should. You have to slow down to find the exit.

If you are in the midst of a conversation and begin to get angry, slow down. Breathe deep. Take a break and go for a walk. If the person is standing in front of you, expecting an immediate answer, you can tell them you will deliberately slow the conversation down, to make sure you handle the situation wisely. Lately, I am placing a hand on my mouth as I listen to someone speak. The three seconds it takes me to take my hand off my mouth in order to speak have saved me more than once. The angrier you are, the softer you should speak. Imagine you are in a slow motion video and choose your words much more carefully.

For years I worked at a high school. Every three to four months, we had an evacuation drill for students to know what to do in case of emergency. We could do the same with anger! Let us plan ahead of time what we will do to slow down when we get Let us learn to recognize which situations most frequently spark our anger. Let us practice as much as needed, with self-compassion and discipline. find the exit on the anger freeway, we need to slow down.

Dear Lord, I want to learn to be responsible with my feelings of anger and rage.
Help me to discover the best technique I can use to slow down my reactions.
I want to handle my emotions so as not to hurt myself or others; and, of course, so as not to dishonor You. Thank You because I know I am not alone; I do not only depend on my wisdom. You help me and send the Holy Spirit to strengthen me. Thank You, Lord Jesus! Amen.
