THE LAST KEY

«So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple» (Luke 14:33).

THERE ARE THINGS IN LIFE THAT JUST DON’T ALLOW FOR AN «ALMOST.» As someone once put it: «Almost sweet is tasteless, almost hot is lukewarm, almost healthy is sick, almost Christian is . . . worldly!» And «almost saved»? «Almost but not wholly saved, means to be not almost but wholly lost.”-Christ Object Lessons, ch. 9, p. 118.

The veracity of these words is well illustrated by the experience of F. B. Meyer, one of my favorite Christian authors. He says that at one point in his life he realized that his ministry was languishing, and that his spiritual life lacked power. He prayed about it, but saw no change. Why?

«The Lord was asking me to give Him all the keys of my heart,» he says, «but I was holding on to one.» All but one! And it was precisely that small key that kept Jesus out of his life. The results of this incomplete surrender were evident in the lack of power in his ministry, and in a life devoid of joy and peace.

The story says that Meyer experienced a great struggle, but at last, «with tremendous effort, he gave the Lord the last key. From that moment on, his life had a new power, and he was able to lead many to the Saviors feet.»

When did the transformation occur? It was after Meyer gave the Lord «the last key» that he became a powerful preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So powerful that Charles Spurgeon came to say of him: «Meyer preaches as if he has seen God face to face.»

Does the Lord have free access to every space in your life, or is there still a «room» with a sign that says PRIVATE? In other words, have you surrendered to Him the entire bundle, or are you holding on to the last key, the one that gives access to a hidden corner of your life? Only you can answer, but one thing is certain: In life there are things that do not allow for an «almost,» and one of them is our dedication to the Lord: either we are His completely, or we are not absolutely. This is what Jesus says in today’s verse: » ‘Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.’ »

Lord Jesus, at this moment, I give You «the last key»:
the one that gives You full access to every space of my life.
Please enter my heart and evict from it all that dishonors Your holy name.
I don’t want to hold anything back, because You gave Your all for me on the cross.
