«When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.’ But Simon answered and said to Him, ‘Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net’ » (Luke 5:4, 5).
ONE OF THE AMAZING THINGS about the account found in today’s verse is that Simon Peter is the one whom the Lord Jesus asks to cast the net in deeper waters. A preacher telling a veteran fisherman how to fish? Simon Peter knew from experience that the best time to fish was not during the day, but at night, when the fish cannot perceive the net. Nevertheless. . .
They had already tried fishing the previous night, without any success, yet Simon obeys the Lord’s command. «At Your word I will let down the net,» he said.
What happened then? Scripture says that «they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking» (v. 6). And then the little boat began to sink! So much so that they had to ask the fishermen who were on another boat for help, and then it didn’t take long for that boat to also begin to sink.
Undoubtedly, a great miracle. So great that if you don’t open your eyes wide, you lose sight of the other miracle. The biblical account says that after that miraculous fishing experience, Simon fell to his knees and recognized that he was in the presence of God Himself.
«Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!» (v. 8).
» ‘Do not be afraid,’ » Jesus said. » ‘From now on you will catch men’ » (v. 10). That day, not only Simon, but also all his fishing companions «forsook all and followed Him» (v. 11). That was the other miracle! They left everything just as their small fishing company was going through their best moment: «At the moment of success, when the nets were filled with fish, and the impulses of the old life were strongest, Jesus asked the disciples at the sea to leave all for the work of the gospel. So every soul is tested as to whether the desire for temporal good or for fellowship with Christ is strongest.»—The Desire of Ages, ch. 28, p. 273.
How interesting! Jesus calls some «in their wealth»; and others, «in their poverty,» but the challenge for all is the same: What will take first place in our hearts: temporal goods or fellowship with Christ?
The other miracle can happen to you, and to me, if «at His word» we cast the net today.
Dear Jesus, please show me how to always do Your will, even if what You command seems to be meaningless. And please strengthen my faith in order to give You first place in my life, both at my best and at my worst moments.
