«For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also» (Matthew 6:21).
COULD SOMEONE POSSIBLY have a priceless treasure without knowing it? Or could you possibly have an invaluable treasure without knowing it? It could be possible. It all depends on what we understand by the term «treasure.» An account from the Middle Ages, told by Al and Alice Gray, will help us understand this point.
It is told that one day in the year 1141, an invading army surrounded the walls of Weinsberg Castle in Germany. It was not the first time that the residents of the castle faced such a threat, but on this occasion the chances of prevailing were minimal. All they could do, apparently, was turn themselves in. Only the demands of the invading army were quite high: women and children would be pardoned on the condition that they surrender their riches and the lives of the men who defended the castle. That was too much. So then the wives also put forth their conditions. They would meet the demands only if they were allowed to take with them all the riches they could carry in their hands.
How many jewels can they carry in their hands? the head of the invaders asked himself. No matter how much they take out, there will always be an immense wealth left within the walls! In this way, their condition was granted to theme. The story says that when the castle gates were opened, great was the enemy army’s surprise when they saw that each of the women came out hand-in-hand with her husband.
How interesting! What about you, have you identified your true treasure yet? Have I identified it? Today’s text helps us to respond, because it reminds us that wherever our treasure is, our hearts will be there also. In other words, wherever what is most important to us is, there also will be our thoughts and our interests. So, what is our greatest treasure? It’s what we value most in this life.
If there is one thing the wives of Weinsberg teach us, it is that no earthly wealth, however great, can compare to the value of our loved ones: our spouse, children, parents, in general, our loved ones—included in this category, our good friends. We wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world! Right? But let us be careful; we must not let, without realizing it, other «treasures»—work, social media, material goods, to name just a few—steal the time and attention that our loved ones expect from us and also deserve. I decided years ago that, after Jesus Christ, «the Pearl of great price,» there is no greater treasure for me than my family and my good friends. What about you, have you made your decision yet?
Dear Jesus, I want You to always be my greatest treasure; and I pray that no earthly treasure may occupy in my heart the place of honor that belongs to my loved ones.
