“The next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said. «Behold the Lamb of God!’ The two disciples heard him speak. and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ They said to Him, ‘Rabbi.’ which is to say, when translated, Teacher, ‘where are You staying’ » (John 1:35-38).
TODAY’S PASSAGE is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful passages in the entire New Testament, perhaps because of the number of significant details it includes. The passage begins with John the Baptist fulfilling the work for which he was born into this world: to point to Jesus as the Lamb of God. When they heard him, two of his disciples followed Jesus. One of them was Andrew, Peter’s brother. The other, according to The Desire of Ages, was “John the evangelist.”—ch. 14, p. 138. When Jesus realized that they were following Him, He asked them, “What do you seek?” Then they answered with another question: “Where are You staying?”
“Where are you staying?” Could they not think of asking anything else? What would you have asked the Lord? At first glance, Andrew’s and John’s question seems irrelevant, but it was not at all irrelevant. Apparently, what these two disciples wanted was to have enough time to ask Jesus many questions. What better environment to ask them than where the Master was staying?
“In a brief interview by the wayside,” we read in The Desire of Ages, “they could not receive that for which they longed. They desired to be alone with Jesus, to sit at His feet, and hear His words.”—Ibid. And that was exactly what happened! In response to the Lord’s invitation: “Come and see,” the two disciples “came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour)” (John 1:39); that is, around four o’clock in the afternoon.
We will never know what they spoke about in that evening interview, but one thing we do know: that conversation with Jesus must have deeply impressed Andrew, because the first thing he did after being in the Savior’s company was to share the good news with his brother Simon: “We have found the Messiah,” he said (v. 41).
Today it is also your privilege to “be alone with Jesus and hear His words.” You can take Him your burdens and ask Him everything that confuses you. The best thing is that access to Him is free, unconditional, and with no time limits. Too good to be true? Try it and see what happens, starting today: In fact, His invitation to you is this: Come and see.”
Dear Jesus, like Andrew and John, I intend to spend more time “alone with You, to sit at Your feet, and hear Your words.” Indeed, Lord, I want to have a personal encounter with You every day so that I can announce to others that You are the Messiah.
