Elizabeth Elliot was an American writer and missionary. Her husband, Jim Elliot, was killed during his work among the Quechua tribes of eastern Ecuador in 1956. Despite this, Elizabeth continued to work as a missionary for two years, serving members of the tribe who had murdered her husband. When she returned to the United States, Elizabeth wrote more than twenty books and became an accomplished speaker.
In one of her books, Passion and Purity, Elizabeth talked about love, loneliness, and waiting. Jim and Elizabeth met in college, but it was five years before Jim realized it was God’s will for him and Elizabeth to get married. Just three years after her wedding in Quito, and with a ten-month-old baby in her arms, Elizabeth lost her husband. «I know that waiting on God requires being willing to endure uncertainty, to live with an unanswered question, raising our hearts to God every time it invades our thoughts,» she wrote. Waiting on God implies the painful vulnerability of not knowing, not controlling, and not understanding.
I don’t know what question you have nailed in your heart. I don’t know what prayer you repeat without seeing answers. However, I invite you to cling harder to Jesus. Faith doesn’t take away questions, but it gives us Someone to take them to. In Secure in the Everlasting Arms, the author added, «God knows not only what we need, but also when we need it. When He holds back the one thing we are sure would make us happy, it is good to remember His promise that He will supply all our needs «according to His riches in Christ Jesus.»
Dear Jesus, I’ve been waiting a long time. I’ve been carrying this burden for a long time.
I have so many questions! I know You have the power to free me of my anxieties, but You don’t seem to hear me, I’m looking for answers, but I’m just getting silence,
Please help me! Give me the humility to wait on You even though I don’t understand what’s going on. Protect me! Don’t let my heart be filled with self-pity or mistrust.
Work a miracle. Purify me while I wait. Make my love and faith for you grow every day.
