«And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased» (Hebrews 13: 16, NIV).
“LORD, I LONG TO SEE YOUR FACE,» Diana asked in prayer. Shortly after, she received an urgent message in which she was told that a patient, named Corky, would be transferred to her district within 24 hours. Corky would need all the medical attention she could possibly receive, because she was in a terminal phase of her illness. But the report also said that Corky was uncooperative and difficult to manage. When Diana went to the address that was listed for Corky, she found that it was at a trailer park. She greeted Mike at the door.
«Are you the nurse?» Mike asked, as he invited her to come in.
The place left much to be desired and needed a deep cleaning.
«I’m sorry for the mess,» Mike said. «I’ve been cleaning all night so that she could move here. I think she’s going to like it.»
As Diana filled out some paperwork, Mike told her that Corky did not have much time left to live and asked for all the help they could give her. Back in her office, Diana reviewed Corky’s medical history and found out that she had breast cancer, but had not received adequate treatment simply because she had refused to receive it. In the days that followed, a whole team of nurses and assistants made sure Corky lacked nothing. Mike, in turn, was at her side twenty-four hours a day, caring for her, and making sure she ate and took her medicine.
When Corky passed away, Mike cried silently. Trying to comfort him, Diana told him that he had done everything a husband could have ever done.
«Husband?» Mike replied with surprise. «I barely know her!»
At Diana’s startled look, Mike explained. Corky lived in the streets, without anyone to take care of her. When he found out about her situation, and knew she was dying, he bought the trailer home so Corky would have a decent place to live. In other words, a modern-day version of the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Mike while spoke, tears ran down his cheeks. Then Diana remembered the prayer she had said a few days earlier. She had told God that she longed to see face. Was this His an answer to her prayer? «Mike was standing there,» she says, «but I saw the face of Jesus [that day]. »
Heavenly Father, today I want to be a Good Samaritan to someone in need. Please help me to reflect Jesus’s face wherever I am.
