«Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand» (Isaiah 41:10, NLT).
Trillia Newbell is an American preacher who has written numerous books. A few months ago, I had the privilege of speaking to her about faith and fear. Although Trillia is a young woman, she has gone through many trials. She was raised in a poor family; their electricity would often be cut off because they had no money to pay their bill. During her first year at university, Trillia was the victim of sexual assault. Just a few months later, her father died. After getting married, she had four spontaneous abortions and several health issues. In spite of all those trials, instead of becoming paralyzed with fear and anxiety, Trillia is a woman who is full of faith and trust in God. How does she do that?
Trillia believes many of our fears spring up when we face uncertainty and the possibility of loss. «Many of my fears are rooted in not believing God will truly take care of me,» she confessed. However, «one of the ‘benefits’ (I know it sounds strange to use this word) of going through trials is that I can look back and see God has been faithful. I can see God has sustained me.» Experiencing God’s presence in our trials gives us the faith we need to face the future. «That does not mean it is easy,» says Trillia. «It is hard; I have to ask for help to fully trust in God and place all my burdens at His feet.» However, as we remember the past and begin letting go of our worries, we discover God loves us intimately and personally.
In her book Fear and Faith, «The Lord proclaims: ‘Fear not, for I am with you’. He reminds us He is our God. He is a personal and intimate God. . . When fear tell you that you are alone, God whispers: ‘I am your God.’ He will sustain you…Your fears tell you that you are not up to the task, and never will be. God tells you: ‘ I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.’ » Let faith—not fear—govern your life.
Dear Lord, fear and anxiety deafen me,
please remind me that You are still at my side.
You had lead me thus this far, and will continue to faithfully lead me. Whisper in my ear that You are my God and that you will always uphold me.
