THE GIFT OF UNCERTAINTY

«God told him, ‘Leave your native land and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you’ »
(Acts 7:3, NLT).

My friend Judy is a beautiful and adventurous Scotswoman. Together, we toured Munich, Germany, and the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Several years ago, for my birthday, Judy organized a trip to Paris. Seeing the lights of the Eiffel Tower light up that night was amazing; a matchless gift.

If Judy came to my house today and told me «pack an extra outfit and get in the car quickly, we’re going sightseeing,» I would do it in an instant, without hesitation. Even if she did not tell me where we were going, I would get in the car without protesting and would begin enjoying the adventure beside her. I want to have a relationship like that with Jesus. What prevents me from having it? My desire to control it all.
Control is nothing less than an illusion, but boy how hard it is to let it go! It is a defense mechanism we use to deal with our fears: fear of failure, pain, death. . . We control and manipulate to feel more powerful (or a little less vulnerable). We get mad when things do not go our way, because it is as if life were yelling in our face: «You do not have it all under control!»

Following Jesus implies yielding control. But uncertainty is not our archenemy, instead it is a gift. When God gives us uncertainty, it is like receiving a pair of socks for Christmas. Every kid would rather get toys, but parents understand the difference between «wanting» and «needing.» If we embrace uncertainty, our tolerance for risk and our dependence on God increases.

It is a supernatural challenge, but the Holy Spirit’s power is also supernatural. I recently made a decision that filled me with fear regarding the future. I spent many nights with little sleep. In the midst of that emotional earthquake, I felt God was calling me to embrace uncertainty. Little by little, I began loosening my numb fingers from around the steering wheel and placing my hands in Jesus’s hands. God slowly began to replace my panic with a feeling of expectation and adventure.

Jesus, please help me to accept the gift of uncertainty, that forces me to go forward by faith and not by sight.
I want to allow myself to be surprised. I want to trust in You more and open my heart to the unexpected, to the adventure of living life together, You and I.
