«When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, ‘What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?’ » (Exodus 18:14, NLT).

Asking for help is a sign of strength. When Jethro noticed Moses spent the whole day solving disputes among the children of Israel, he said, «This is not good . . . This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself» (Exodus 18:17, 18). The work itself was not bad or sinful, but it was too much for just one person. Moses needed to prioritize and delegate. Jethro suggested that Moses set up rulers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and often to judge small matters. Serious issues could be brought to Moses, who would then have time to teach the people the statutes and laws.

Moses humbly accepted Jethro’s suggestions and put them into practice. He was able to do that because his -identity was not based on his job. As women, it is often hard for us to delegate because we want to feel indispensable. Even when we wear ourselves out, we continue taking on a ton of activities to prove we are capable and irreplaceable. «Like most women, I take pleasure in being needed,» writes psychologist Marcia Eckerd in her article «Letting Go of Being Indispensable.» «l feel a need to be on top of things, [but] I also had time to think. I realized I needed to let go . . . of the feeling I was (or needed to be) indispensable to and for everything.» Asking for help is a sign of strength: it implies we finally understand and accept our limitations.

Delegating implies yielding control. We often think: I do it better and faster. Nevertheless, that is merely an excuse so as to not spend time helping others develop their skills and leadership. God does everything better and faster than any human being; however, He delegates. After creating the world, He gave Adam and Eve authority to rule over it (Genesis 1:28). Jesus gave us authority to make disciples (Matthew 28:19, 20) and to make decisions with effects on earth and in heaven (Matthew 16:19). Let us imitate God. Let us learn to delegate.

Dear Lord, I often do too many things because I want to feel indispensable.
Teach me to delegate wisely, to acknowledge and accept my limitations, to ask for help. Only You are irreplaceable!
