THE «BAROMETER» OF SPIRITUAL LIFE

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates» (Exodus 20:8-10).

AN ACCURATE «BAROMETER» of spiritual life. That’s what M. L. Andreasen calls the commandment to observe the seventh-day Sabbath as a day of rest.

Why does he call it that? Because no other commandment promotes the worship of God and fellowship with our Creator as much as the commandment for Sabbath observance does. «As men forget the Sabbath they forget God,» Andreasen writes, «As they become careless in Sabbath Keeping they become careless in other religious duties.'»

Someone might claim that we can worship God on any other day of the week. The problem with this argument is that it clashes head-on with this statement: «Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God» (Exodus 20:8—10). What today; text is telling us is that the Sabbath is a special day because God said so. There’s nothing in nature that makes the Sabbath different from the other six days. Why then is it a special day? Because after creating the heavens and the earth in six days, the Creator not only rested on the seventh day, but He also blessed and sanctified it.

God doesn’t pronounce His blessing over any other day of the week. He doesn’t say that any other day is a sign of sanctification (see Ezekiel 20:12). And while there are certainly benefits in the physical rest that Sabbath rest provides, this isn’t the primary reason for the commandment. The fundamental reason for observing the Sabbath reminds us, as nothing else can, that God is our Creator and reminds us that because He is the Creator, He is the only One who is worthy of our worship. «It was to keep this truth ever before the minds of men,» we read in The Great Controversy, «that God instituted the Sabbath in Eden; and so long as the fact that He is our Creator continues to be a reason why we should worship Him, so long the Sabbath will continue as its sign and memorial. «—ch. 25,

No wonder the commandment begins with «Remember»! In other words, remember to worship “the Lord [who] made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them” (Exodus 20:11). And remember that your Creator wants to meet with you personally on the day that He blessed and sanctified.

Will you leave Him waiting?

Thank You, heavenly Father, for that precious word «Remember.»
In addition to reminding me of my noble origin,
Your holy day also reminds me that You are worthy of my worship and praise.
