SEEING FACES

«Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth» (John 9: l).

ONE OF MY FAVORITE BIBLE STORIES is that of the healing of the man who was blind from birth, which can be found in John 9. Strange as it may seem, I especially like how the story begins: «As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth.»

What’s so special about the fact that the Lord had seen this blind man? The special thing is that Jesus had indeed seen him; namely, He had noticed him. It’s true that people also saw this blind man every day, but who really noticed him?

Jesus saw in this man what others did not see: his face. And on that face, He could see the pain and suffering of a person who was practically invisible to the crowd. that’s one of our Lord’s unique attributes: no one is invisible to Him. Regardless of how big the crowd was or how difficult the circumstances around Him were, He always saw faces; He saw human beings; He saw sons and daughters of God.
Not long ago, I read an experience lived by author Mark Buchanan that illustrates this point well. Mark had been invited to speak to people who were struggling with different addictions. As a pastor, he had planned to preach a sermon that was appropriate for that type of audience and at the end, as usual, he planned on making a spiritual application.

Mark said that when he arrived in the room, he only saw a group of people addicted to sex, to alcohol, to drugs. Then something happened that radically changed his perception. The group leader asked each person to say his or her name and why each one was there. They all gave their names and briefly spoke of their struggles, their failures, their aspirations. The picture changed instantly; instead of a group of addicts, Mark saw faces; he saw human beings with profound needs. Then he also completely changed the focus of his sermon. Instead of talking to a group of addicts, he spoke to people, sons and daughters of God who were desperately trying to find a support system for their lives.

What do we see in our relatives, in our neighbors, in our co-workers? What do we see in the people who are making life impossible for us? May God help us see in every human being a son, a daughter of God. And may He help us see them as Jesus sees them: not as they are right now, but as who they might become when transformed by His grace.

Kind and loving Father, by Your Holy Spirit,
please prepare me to see in every human being
a valuable person for whom Christ suffered and died.
