«If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new» (2 Corinthians 5: 17).
WHO REALLY REMEMBERS graduation speeches? This question came to my mind when I read an article in which the author, Jill Morikone, recounted the experience she had had while listening, to an eighth grade graduation speech, to be precise.
Jill said it all started when the speaker talked about tombstones and the inscriptions that people usually put on them. «This is unusual,» Jill thought. «This speaker should talk about having dreams, having aspirations, and aiming high. «
The speaker then focused all his attention on the dash found on tombstones, that punctuation mark that separates the dates of birth and death of the deceased. That’s when Jill understood the speaker’s message: the dash, that seemingly insignificant little line, represents everything that happens between the moment of our birth and the end of our lives. What the speaker wanted was to get the young graduates to ask themselves: «How will I use my time? Will I live so that, at the end, one can say that my life was worth it? What mark will I leave on this world?»
Jill said that the speaker continued his speech for a long time, but she could no longer continue listening to it. She couldn’t help wondering, «What will the dash on my tombstone stand for when I die?» «What is the dash in my life saying right now: is it about selfishness or generosity, grudges or forgiveness, bad habits or victory?»
As I read the article, what happened to Jill while she was listening to the speech also happened to me. My mind disconnected from the article and focused on me: What does the dash of my life indicate? What does it say about the kind of husband, father, friend, Christian that I am? Does it speak about my glory or the glory of God?
What about the dash of your life: what does it speak OP Here is some good news to start this new day—and the new year also —no matter what your life has been so far, God’s power can change it. If when you look back you only see faults and failures, remember that God has the power to make all things new. As today’s verse indicates, «if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new,»
A new page will be written today in your life. Write it in a way that will glorify God!
Thank You, Lord Jesus, because You can make all things new.
Change my heart, Lord, so that I may live today and always to glorify Your holy name.
