Do you like going to church on Sabbath and attending Sabbath School? I’m sure you team many lessons from the Bible, right?
Jesus also loved going to church every Sabbath. The Jews called it the synagogue, which means ”meeting place” in Hebrew.
When Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, Jews began to meet in synagogues.
In Jesus’s days there were many synagogues in the most important cities of the Roman Empire.
People met in synagogues to read the law and the prophets, that is, the Old Testament, which is called the Scriptures in the Bible.
One Sabbath, Jesus went to the synagogue in his hometown, Nazareth. When they saw Him, people asked Him to preach.
So Jesus stood up and read a text written by the prophet, that announced what His mission would be: to help the poor, the sick, and all those who didn’t know God.
They all realized He was talking about Himself as the promised Savior.
Those who heard Him got angry because they thought Jesus was just Joseph and Mary’s son, and they didn’t believe He was the promised Savior, the Son of God.
They got so angry that they insulted Him, cornered Him, and took Him outside the city.
Jesus had to make His way through that angry mob and leave. People from His own hometown, where He had grown up, didn’t acknowledge Him as their Savior.
Jesus felt very sad as He left Nazareth because they had rejected Him.
Jesus loves everyone, but He doesn’t force anyone to believe in Him.
